Case study: Thermal energy waste

Savings through process analysis

Incoming refinery oil was heated using steam while a separate hot oil stream was simultaneously cooled using cooling water. Large amounts of thermal energy were therefore being added and rejected within the same process. Through process analysis, Cotopaxi identified an opportunity to recover heat from the outgoing 150°C oil stream and transfer it to incoming refinery oil through a two-stage heat exchanger arrangement.
